A critical illness is one that renders a patient seriously ill such that their condition can be called “critical”, or unstable – not sure whether they will get better or not. Patients with critical illness may be cared for a while on a Critical Care or Intensive Care Unit.
Critical illness may also viewed as one that results in substantial long-term alteration of the patient’s health and well-being.
