Who are the Macmillan haematology nurse specialists?
We are a team of four Haematology nurse specialists based at The Royal Sussex County Hospital. Each of us acts as the keyworker for particular diseases but all work as part of the haematology multidisciplinary team.
Acting as your key worker, we are able to provide support and information to all patients and their families, with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of a haematological cancer or haematological diagnosis.
This may be information about the disease, its treatment, financial or emotional matters. We can also suggest other useful sources of help and support.
The Haematology nurse specialists are part of a team of healthcare professionals who specialise in the different aspects of your care. This team has a weekly team meeting to present all new cases. Consultant haematologists, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and nurses discuss each case to make the diagnosis and plan your treatment.
The team also uses this meeting to discuss response to treatment. If you would like a copy of any letter written about your treatment, please ask your nurse specialist.
We also have a Macmillan Support Worker in our team who can provide information and (non-medical) advice and support. This may include assistance with appointments’ and investigations and liaising with other health and social care professionals on your behalf. She can also make referrals to other services both in the hospital and in the community.
Your details will be shared with our Macmillan colleagues; to help us best support you during your cancer pathway and ensure you have access to our supportive services. Macmillan will keep your details safe and any information is kept confidential. You can 3 choose how much information to give or withdraw your consent at any time by discussing this with your CNS team. For information on how Macmillan Cancer Support look after your data or how to exercise your data rights, please see the Macmillan privacy policy: Alternatively, you can contact the team at the Horizon Centre in person or by calling 01273 468770 or by emailing [email protected].
Please feel free to contact us at any time during our normal working hours, either via telephone or email. If we are unavailable at the time leave a message, and we will call you back as soon as possible. We aim to get back to you the same day but will sometimes be the next working day.
Even if you think your problem is trivial, it usually helps to talk to someone who understands your diagnosis.
