A special screening of ‘Polite Society’ a British Comedy with elements of drama, heist, action and martial arts is taking place this Thursday 2 May at Duke’s at Komedia in Brighton.
The one-off screening, which is funded by NHS Blood and Transplant, and organised by University of Brighton’s Donor Research Team and The New Black Film Collective includes a panel that aims to spark vital conversations and engage the audience on the shortage of organ donation amongst British Asians.
The expert panel includes clinicians, academics and people in the Asian community with lived challenges of organ donation to help promote more informed choices about donating.
Joana Letra, Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation at University Hospitals Sussex will be on the panel discussing her role and work in the wider South East Organ Donation Services Team, she adds:
“The screening and panel are a great opportunity to raise vital awareness surrounding organ donation in ethnic minority groups. The proportion of people from Asian and Black communities on the NHS Organ Donor Register is steadily rising, but remains low compared with other communities.”
“This is a huge issue for people needing an organ transplant and there is still so much we can do to raise awareness and support families with difficult decisions.”
The film follows the spirited Ria Khan (played by Priya Kansara), an aspiring stuntwoman on a mission to rescue her older sister Lena (portrayed by Ritu Arya) from an impending marriage. Enlisting the help of her friends, Ria embarks on the ultimate wedding heist, exploring themes of womanhood and femininity along the way.
Watch the film and hear more from Joana and other experts at 6:45pm on Thursday 2 May at the cinema, Duke’s at Komedia in Brighton.
The cost of tickets goes directly to supporting organ donation initiatives.
