Our children’s medical ward has 26 beds in total, including the four-bed oncology day care ward.
About us
We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and care for babies, children and young people up to the age of 19.
Our team is led by the ward manager and supported by children’s nurses, surgical, medical and allied healthcare professionals, all of whom specialise in the care of children and young people. We also support you with our dedicated play specialists who spend time with you during your stay.
We care for children with a wide range of medical conditions, including cystic fibrosis, asthma, diabetes, oxygen dependency, infectious diseases, complex needs, overdoses, psychiatric issues such as self harming and chest infections such as pneumonia, respiratory and metabolic disorders.
During your stay
Your safety is very important to us and our ward is strictly controlled by a video security system for visitors and by an electronic card access for staff who have been given access. Our entrances are monitored 24 hours a day by video cameras linked to our security control room. All of this ensures that your children remain in a safe environment whilst in our care.
We have 19 single bedrooms with their own bathrooms, giving you and your parents/carers plenty of privacy and quiet. Two of these are designed for older children with a semi-separated parents bedroom for more privacy. The other beds are in a four-bed bay with their own bathroom. All rooms have low-level windows that you can see out of when lying in bed, and a television allow you access to a range of children’s channels, documentaries and films.
Parents and children have a central space for play and we have a teenagers room with PlayStation, X-box and TV. Parents are free to use the kitchen with fridge, freezer and microwave as well as the parents lounge with vending machine.
Our menus are carefully chosen to be nutritious and food that children will recognise and enjoy eating. Vegetarian options are provided. As the food is prepared on the ward, our hostess staff will try to provide something that a child would prefer if it is not on the menu.
Additional support
Our team of community nurses provide ongoing care for your child at home where needed. They will visit you on the ward before you are discharged and continue to visit you at home as long as you need their support. Some children who live locally may be allowed to leave the ward for a few hours between doses of medication.
Our entire nursing, surgical and medical team works together to ensure that you are given the highest quality of care so that you can recover and return home with your families as soon as possible.
