Biography
Mr Madhu Rao is a Consultant orthopaedic surgeon in University Hospitals Sussex, primarily working at St. Richard’s Hospital, Chichester and Worthing Hospitals, Worthing. He has been clinical director for trauma and orthopaedics for St Richard’s and Worthing Hospitals since July 2019.
Special interest in Lower Limb Orthopaedic Surgery.
He has expertise in minimal invasive hip replacement, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, revision (redo) hip and revision (redo) knee replacement, periprosthetic fractures around hip and knee replacement, limb reconstruction surgery such as proximal and distal femoral replacement, proximal tibial replacement, soft tissue injuries around knee and ligament reconstructions, management of muscle tears or weakness following hip replacement surgery.
Madhu is part of an on call orthopaedic team at St Richard’s Hospital and he manages acute orthopaedic emergencies and all fractures with specialist interest around hip, femur, knee, leg, ankle, forearm and wrist.
Madhu also sees NHS patients at Goring Hall Hospital, and Chichester Nuffield Hospital.
Having qualified in 1991, Madu undertook his higher specialist training in Orthopaedics in Kent, Surrey and Sussex deanery including London hospitals. He obtained his Fellowship from Royal College of Surgeons in 1999 and did his FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Post qualification he has trained in specialist hospitals in Germany, Belgium and USA to obtain more experience in lower limb arthroplasty including hip and knee revision arthroplasty.
He is involved in teaching of higher surgical trainees and medical students from Kent Sussex and Surrey Deanery, Southampton university hospitals and Brighton Medical school. He lectures nationally and internationally. He has devised and published a new surgical technique for repair of torn hip abductor muscles using graft jacket regenerative tissue matrix, which has been widely published in peer reviewed journals and presented in international meetings around Europe, Australia, USA and Asia. Madhu has done extensive work revision knee arthroplasty, distal femoral replacements, MRSA risk of infections in joint replacements, enhanced recovery in hip and knee replacements etc., which has been published and presented internationally.
